A. Anyone born after Sept. 1st 1971 must successfully complete the course to hunt in Texas. Other States may require all hunters, regardless of age to complete the course. Please check the law in states you intend to hunt other than Texas.
B. The minimum age to take the course for credit is 9 years.
C. Successful completion of the course can be either by attending the standard class or by the home study method. The class method requires a minimum of ten hours of structured class covered in two or more days. The home study course is exactly what it says. A course is purchased at your outdoor store, the course of study is completed at the student's convenience. In either case,
D. Evaluation by an instructor as acceptable in knowledge, skill and ATTITUDE and
E. Attaining a minimum score of 70% correct on an examination prescribed by the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife. Proof of certification is an Department issued card or a temporary receipt issued by the instructor which must be carried at all times while hunting with all firearms and archery equipment. In addition to a valid hunting license, each hunter must carried a picture I.D. (drivers liciense, student activity card, etc.)
The Objectives is to increase awareness of hunter education in Texas and North America with emphasis on safe gun handling and to give information relative to hunting opportunities, administration and management efforts in Texas.

- Always Point the muzzle in a safe direction.
- Treat every firearm or bow with the same respect you would show a loaded gun or nocked arrow.
- Be sure of your target and what it is in front of and beyond your target.
- Unload firearms and unstring recurve and long bows when not in use.
- Handle firearms, arrows and ammunition carefully.
- Know your safe zone-of-fire and stick to it.
- Control your emotions when it comes to safety.
- Wear hearing and eye protection.
- Don't drink alcohol or take drugs before or while handling firearms or bows and arrows.
- Be aware of any circumstances which require added caution or safety awareness.
